More fun! with Windows Home Server

OK so I have playing with Windows Home Server (WHS) for a few weeks now and decided to order the 120 day evaluation kit from Microsoft after the usual 2 week wait (why are they so slow to deliver!) I installed the WHS as a fresh installation on my home built server (an old Mega 180 small form factor PC)

All went well for the first day until the thing advised that my 120 day evaluation had expired!!! and I could no longer log into the server

Did some research on the net and a few people have had similar problems, see here.  I did a server reinstall and am still setting up the system again

Hopefully it will last longer than a day this time!!

I Like WHS

So far seems to be working ok

Hard drive installed not big enough to back up my PCs.  Need a couple of big 500gb ata drives

Checked online prices and you can buy a drive enclosure with USB 2.0 connection for the same price as a bare bones drive!

It would make more sense to buy the USB Hard drives and strip out the drives for use in the server.  I would then be able to put a couple of spare small capacity drives in the enclosures for portable storage

I have a couple of Maxtor Nas drives with 300gb disks.  I may as well use these for now and save a bit of cash

WHS. Windows Home Server

I at last got around to installing RC1 of Windows Home Server (WHS) on a spare PC.  The full version has been out a few months now

At first I could not see it on my network.  I had to load a NIC driver.  Surprisingly my nforce NIC was not recognised by the install CD.  I guess this could be fixed on the final release

So far it all seems to work ok.  I will see how well it backs up my PCs tonight
